English tests for international students

Certain schools and universities are given permission by the Government of Canada to recruit international students. These schools are called Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). International students must provide proof that they had passed an English test from an accredited provider. These are the English tests for international students that are accepted by DLIs in Canada.

CANADIAN ACADEMIC ENGLISH LANGUAGE (CAEL)

Most English-speaking DLIs accept the results of the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test.

CAEL is available in the Philippines from Paragon Testing Enterprises.

CAEL test results are usually available within 8 business days.

CAMBRIDGE ASSESSMENT TEST

Over 200 DLIs accept the results of the Cambridge Assessment Test.

Results for the computer-based component are usually available within 2 to 3 weeks, while results for the paper-based component are usually available in 4 to 6 weeks.

DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST

Duolingo English Test results are accepted by more than 140 DLIs across Canada.

Results from the Duolingo English Test are usually available within two business days.

INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS) ACADEMIC

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic test is recognized by more than 400 DLIs all across Canada.

The British Council administers IELTS in the Philippines.

IELTS test results are usually available within 13 business days (for paper-based tests) and within 5 to 7 business day (for computer-based tests).

Applicants who score at least 6.0 on the speaking, listening, reading and writing portions of their IELTS can apply for a Study Permit within 20 days under the Student Direct Stream (SDS).

Only test results from IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic are accepted for SDS applications. An online test called the IELTS Indicator is presently available.

PEARSON TEST OF ENGLISH (PTE)

The results for the Pearson Test of English (PTE) is accepted by most DLIs in Canada.

PTE results are usually available within 2 business days, while the online Versant English Test are available as soon as you complete the test.

TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL)

TOEFL results are accepted by every university in Canada.

TOEFL test results are usually available within 6 business days. An online version called the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is currently available.
