Philippine Independence Day

As Filipinos around the world celebrate the 122nd Philippine Independence Day, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a statement recognizing the many meaningful contributions Filipinos have made to Canadian society.

I join the Filipino people in celebrating the Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.

One hundred and twenty-two years ago, our forebears, armed with nationalistic fervour and indomitable spirit, proclaimed the birth of a sovereign nation founded on democratic ideals and grand aspirations for a prosperous future. As heirs to this legacy, it is our unavoidable duty to protect the Republic that they established by defending our freedoms and preserving our way of life.

The fight against COVID-19 is an opportunity for this generation of Filipinos to embody the strength of character of the martyrs of our past as we collectively strive to weather this public health emergency. Taking inspiration from our modern day heroes, our healthcare professionals, law enforcement personnel, essential workers and other frontlines, let us contribute to this cause by dedicating our resources and sacrificing our petty desires for the sake of the common good.

Looking forward to the future with much optimism, let us all free ourselves from fear, selfishness and prejudice so that we may endure this pandemic and rebuild a society that we can confidently leave behind to future generations of Filipinos.

May we have a meaningful commemoration.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Philippine Independence Day:

“Today, we join the Filipino community in Canada and around the world to celebrate the 122nd anniversary of Philippine Independence.

“The Filipino community has become one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, reaching nearly one million people. The community enriches our national fabric, and plays a pivotal role in strengthening the close bonds between our two countries.

“Looking to the future, Canada will continue to work with the Philippines to deepen our relationship in a number of areas of common interest, such as international trade and development.

“As we mark Philippine Independence Day and given that June is Filipino Heritage Month, I encourage all Canadians to recognize the significant contributions and the rich culture and traditions that past and present generations of Canadians of Filipino origin have brought to our country. I extend my best wishes to all those celebrating today in Canada, the Philippines, and around the world.

“Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan!

Mahal kong mga kababayan,

June is upon us once again, a time of remembering our roots and honouring the men and women who have fought for the independence of the Republic of the Philippines and the freedom of the Filipino people. Since 1898, Filipino have come together every year in June to commemorate this important part of our history.

Last year, we had the opportunity to celebrate the first Filipino Heritage Month in Canada, a recognition generously given by the Government of Canada to honour the generations of Filipinos who have made Canada their new home and contributed to its well being.

The traditional activities that we have all come to anticipate and conscientiously prepare for every year have been put on hold, however as we face a situation unprecedented in our lifetime. The COVID-19 pandemic affects all countries around the world, including the Philippines and Canada, and the spirit of bayanihan now exhorts us to forego our usual celebrations to keep ourselves, our loved ones and our communities safe and healthy. This is a difficult challenge for all of us, but one that will ultimately lead us closer to the day when we can one again gather in fellowship.

This period is likewise an occasion for us to express our appreciation for the people who are leading efforts to address the pandemic. Filipinos in Canada count among the many workers at the frontlines of this endeavour. Their presence in the healthcare sector and other essential services are invaluable in the maintenance of public health and safety and sia a reminder that heroism does not only belong to the past. We salute them of their dedication and hard work. We honour those who gave their lives in carrying out their oath to serve humanity.

I wish you all well and look forward to the near future when Filipinos in Canada can once again come together in celebration of our heritage and history.

Mabuhay kayang lahat!
