DOLE – 600K OFWs affected by pandemic applied for cash assistance

In a statement released by the Philippine Government’s Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) over the weekend, over 600,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) have applied for government aid.

604,403 OFWs affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have applied for a one-time payment of USD$200.00 (PhP10,000.00) under DOLE’s Abot Kamay Ang Pagtulong (AKAP) Program.

The applications were made by OFWs through Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) in different countries around the world.

The Philippine Government had initially provided PhP 2.5 billion in funding to DOLE for the AKAP Program, enough for 250,000 OFWs.

So far, DOLE has approved 237,778 applications for the AKAP Program.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has provided an additional PhP5 billion to fund ongoing repatriation efforts and aid programs for OFWs.

Funds will be distributed to various government agencies such as the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), which is responsible for the repatriation of OFWs.
